THE BUTTERFLY'S FLAME
by K. B. Johnson © Summer, 2003

The hypnotic flame of a candle—
soft, radiating, sensual beauty
that alludes to the warmth of a vast heart
and of a sheath of passion—
is eternal to the butterfly lured by the glow of splendor.

It flutters around the beacon of a hope
of feeling such encompassing warmth,
never wanting to be singed,
yet never wanting to douse the flame,
with the air of its flickering wings.
